Itinerary

• Day 1: Sandakan, Arrival

  Your journey commences with a warm welcome at Sandakan Airport and a seamless transfer to your resort adjacent to a forest reserve. You're well-placed in Sandakan to get up-close encounters with Malaysia's varied wildlife.

  Check in and freshen up before heading out to visit the nearby Rainforest Discovery Centre. Many birds, wildlife, and insects live high on the trees, best seen from the treetop Canopy Walkway, hanging bridge, and viewing towers high up to 25 meters. As you walk, keep an eye out for red giant flying squirrels, which usually emerge from their nests around dusk.

  Once back at your resort, enjoy dinner in the soothing forest sounds. This evening, you can opt for a night walk (about one hour) with your in-house guide to spot nocturnal wildlife in the surrounding rainforests.

• Day 2: Sandakan

  After breakfast, set off to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary within the coastal mangrove forest. These Borneo's indigenous monkeys, named for their big dangling noses, are wild and free to roam around the expansive sanctuary. The morning feeding session increases the chance of observing them and taking photos at a safe yet closed distance.

  This afternoon goes with an educational visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where the injured and orphaned orangutans are prepared for their wild forest life. Follow a wooden boardwalk through the lush forest to watch orangutans, man's closest relative, from the nursery and feeding platforms. Next, explore the neighboring Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, dedicated to restoring captived sun bears to their natural habitats.

• Day 3: Sandakan - Sukau

  Enjoy a tranquil morning at the lodge. After lunch, embark on a 2.5-hour boat journey along the Kinabatangan River from the Sandakan jetty to your riverside lodge in Sukau Village. Once settled in, join a guided afternoon river cruise aboard a quiet electric-powered boat to seek out the diverse birds and wildlife in this pristine rainforest.

  As the night falls, relax to the sights of the river and enjoy your dinner by the flickering candlelight at the lodge's restaurant. End the day with an engaging slide presentation and commentary from your naturalist guide.

• Day 4: Sukau

  Take an early morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan to the Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, when the rainforest stirs to life in the gentle morning light. Encounter vibrant birdlife and native creatures in their natural habitat. Following breakfast, set out on an educational tour along the Hornbill Boardwalk, led by the lodge's naturalist.

  After lunch, engage in an in-house Orangutan Talk, enhancing your quest to uncover the secrets of Borneo's wildlife. Your adventure continues in the afternoon with another thrilling river cruise, ensuring more captivating encounters with Borneo's diverse wildlife.

• Day 5: Sukau

  Rise early for a second morning boat safari, meandering along the Menanggol River in search of wildlife. Afterward, return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast. You'll have some leisure time to catch up on some sleep or trek along the lodge's jungle boardwalk trails. Closing out the day, venture out on an evening river cruise for the final chance to check off more remarkable animals from your checklist.

• Day 6: Sukau - Sandakan, Departure

  After breakfast, return to Sandakan by ferry. Following lunch, we'll escort you to the airport for your onward flight. This marks the conclusion of your unforgettable Sabah adventure, leaving you with magical memories.
